Forest School Rhythm

To help your child feel secure and free to explore, we follow a predictable, gentle rhythm each week. While our days are shaped by the seasons and the weather, this reliable flow anchors our time together in the woods.

🌿 The Opening Circle: Grounding & Intention

Focus & Intention: We share a morning greeting, a seasonal song, or a short mindfulness moment to help the children transition from a busy morning into the calm of the forest.

Safety First: We collaboratively review our core safety guidelines—like our boundaries for the day, how to safely navigate logs, and our "stay within sight" practices—so everyone feels confident and secure.

The Day's Offerings: I will introduce the session's seasonal knowledge focus and invitations for learning. Invitations for learning might include specialized tools, arts and crafts supplies, or an open-ended invitation to explore a natural phenomenon.

🌿 Child-Led Exploration & Play

This is the heart of our time together. Once the invitations are set, the children take the lead.

Child-Led Discovery: Children are free to choose their own adventures. Whether they want to deep-dive into the day's offerings, build shelters, track bugs, or engage in deep imaginative play, their natural curiosity directs the learning.

Nourishing the Body: Amidst the play, children can pause to refuel. A wholesome, organic snack is provided each week to keep everyone warm, energized, and ready for adventure.

🌿 The Closing Circle: Reflection & Lore

As our day winds down, we gather back together to process our experiences before heading home.

Reflection & Story: We share our favorite discoveries from the morning, reflecting on the challenges we met and the joys we found.

Forest Lore: We close with a piece of Forest Lore—a seasonal story, a nature myth, or a poem that connects the children to the deeper rhythms of the Alaskan wilderness.

A Note for Parents: This rhythm allows children to develop a deep sense of belonging and confidence. By stepping back and letting them lead the exploration, we honor their innate ability to learn, take calculated risks, and grow in tune with nature.

ABOUT ME

Welcome!

I’m Hannah Graham, the founder and leader at Mat-Su Valley Forest School. As a certified teacher with a Master’s in Education and a deep love for the Alaskan wilderness—including years spent living off the road system—I’ve always found that the best kind of magic happens under an open sky.

I believe childhood should be filled with muddy boots, wild imagination, and the quiet wonder of nature. Mat-Su Valley Forest School is a gentle, open-ended space designed for children to climb, create, and connect deeply with the earth. When I’m not out exploring the trails, I’m a wife and mama to a wonderful baby girl, usually found foraging for wild tasty treasures, baking a comforting dessert, or cozied up with a good book. I can’t wait to discover the wonders of the forest alongside your family!

FAQs and Policies

To keep our gatherings safe, peaceful, and filled with wonder, here is a little guide to how we grow together.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is Mat-Su Valley Forest School?

We are a nature-rooted educational experience where children and their favorite grownups connect with the wild. Think of it less like a traditional classroom and more like a guided, intentional journey through the trees—filled with seasonal nature lore, sensory exploration, and community building.

What ages are welcome?

Our gatherings are designed for early childhood and elementary-aged explorers, with an official age range for participants of 3-12 years old. However, the forest has a way of enchanting everyone in the family, including children 2 & under and those over the age of 12. Based on this, siblings outside the age range are allowed to tag along in the forest, but will not be official participants in forest school.

What should we bring?

Pack like a true woodland explorer! We recommend:

Weather-appropriate layers

A full water bottle and a hearty snack

A sense of curiosity!

What happens if I book a session but need to cancel?

Our official cancellation policy allows you to cancel up to 48 hours before a session for a full refund, minus processing fees. To do so, reach out via email or send a message on Facebook.

Our Gathering Policies & Care Agreement

The Heart of Our Program: A Full Family Experience

Mat-Su Valley Forest School is built on the magic of shared moments. Because we believe the best memories are made side-by-side, this is not a drop-off program. Every child must be accompanied by a parent or dedicated adult caregiver for the entire duration of our gathering.

Note: We look at this as an invitation to slow down and rediscover the wild through your child’s eyes. You’ll be right there to watch them splash in puddles, examine moss, and marvel at the canopy.

Safety & Caregiving: Parents and caregivers remain fully responsible and legally liable for the safety, supervision, and well-being of their own children at all times during our sessions. The forest is a wonderful, dynamic playground, and your attentive eyes ensure it stays a safe one!

Weather & Forest Tidings: We gather rain, shine, or snow! However, if the woods become unsafe due to extreme weather warnings, we will send updates if it is necessary to cancel or reschedule. Always check your inbox before heading out to the trail.
